WHO WE ARE
SOR is Section #793 of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) that represents the Southern Oregon and Northern California area.
Our goal is to create an environment where anyone of any skill level can discuss and practice model rocketry. Whether you’re a teenager or youngster who wants to fly rockets and learn about rocketry, or retired and just want to spend your retirement money flying everything up to mid-power rockets, SOR is here to accommodate you. We hope that our club will expose more people to this exciting hobby and create tremendous learning experiences that will last a lifetime.
WHO CAN JOIN
SOR is open to anyone with an interest in making things go up in the air safely. If you are a beginner and need assistance, we’re more than happy to help you! All ages and skill levels are welcome to launch their rockets at our events! We encourage those wanting to launch to become a NAR member for personal liability purposes, but we will have a waiver that can be signed otherwise. Find out more about NAR membership at http://www.nar.org/join-nar. Spectators are always welcome.
WHERE DO WE MEET
At monthly launches! SOR is not currently holding meetings, but we could schedule Zoom meetings. At these meetings we could discuss rockets, club affairs, weather conditions, and whatever else comes up!
WHERE CAN I LAUNCH ROCKETS
The location of the launch site is Agate Skyways, 884 E. Antelope Rd, Eagle Point, OR 97524. From eastbound OR-140, take a right turn after the dip at Stoneridge Golf Course onto E. Antelope Road. Turn right off E. Antelope Rd. at the fire station and stay left on the gravel road. You will see the “Agate Skyways” sign and a big BLM-style gate. The gate should be open. On a map you will see the model airplane runway strip. Parking and our launch area is south of the runway at the far eastern end. Nice, clean restrooms are maintained on-site; however, no water is available, so bring your own.
WHAT’S THE MOTOR LIMIT AT OUR LAUNCHES? HOW BIG A ROCKET CAN I FLY? HOW HIGH CAN I GO?
As a NAR-sanctioned event, SOR conducts its launches in accordance with the NAR safety code and NFPA 1122, the Code for Model Rockets. Because of several factors, mostly related to the size of our launch site and the need for a Certificate of Authorization/Waiver from the FAA, SOR launch events only permit Class 1, or Model Rockets, as defined. Regulations dictate that we limit motor size to G total impulse (mid-power). Rockets with an on the pad liftoff weight of up to 1,500 grams (3.3 POUNDS) can be flown at our events. Our flight ceiling is approximately 2,400′ AGL. Agate Skyways is a great venue and what we can launch is about as good as it gets for a non-HPR event.
